A short film needs to first be striking and unique. Unlike full movies, they only offer a short time to make an impression on the audience; so the storyline or movement of the film has to happen at a reasonably fast pace, whilst still maintaining quality and details as necessary. This means that the film has to begin with an original idea which avoids repetition.
In addition...
- The script needs to be well planned, and (if possible or necessary) overseen by a professional.
- The film needs good, well-cast actors that make a strong and realistic impression of what is being portrayed.
- Experienced crew should be used to improve quality.
- Funding should be distributed well to ensure that the technology is up to standard and consistent.
- Online viewers will watch, on average, 4 minutes of footage. Films need to be kept short to capture the audience's attention and to make sure that it is suitable for multiple viewing technologies (eg. iPods and mobile phones), if this is an aim of the filmmaker.
- It needs to create an automatic response. It should start well from the beginning in order to persuade programmers, distributers and audiences that this is something they want to see.
- Using a fresh style or technique that offers great variety from other short films.
